Support patient safety. Stop mandatory overtime
Bill 205: The Restricting of Mandatory Overtime for Nurses Act
Manitoba’s chronic nursing shortage is becoming acute. Ongoing health care cuts and closures are causing turmoil in the system and putting patient care at risk. Nursing recruitment and retention is suffering due to a lack of support for nurses and the care they provide. As a result, unsustainable vacancies and workload are causing an increase in mandatory overtime, a dangerous practice that jeopardizes staff and patient safety.
It can’t continue like this. Nurses know that in order to address chronic issues, we need solutions that address the root cause.
That’s why the Manitoba Nurses Union is supporting legislation put forward by the Official Opposition to restrict the use of mandatory overtime. The Restricting of Mandatory Overtime for Nurses Act is modeled after best practices from other jurisdictions, and proposes a responsible, phased-in approach that will prioritize safety and benefit nursing recruitment and retention efforts in Manitoba.
